UNIVERSITY OF HERTFORDSHIRE
PARTICIPANT INFORMATION SHEET
Body Image and Physical Activity.
You are being invited to take part in a study. Before you decide whether to do so, it is important that you understand the research that is being done and what your involvement will include.
Please read this carefully. Do not hesitate to ask us anything that is not clear or for any further information you would like to help you make your decision.
Please do take your time to decide whether or not you wish to take part.
Purpose, restrictions and involvement:
(a) The purpose of this study is to explore the links between body image, mood, social factors and physical activity. It will also develop and validate a new questionnaire measuring “body compassion” (a measure of self-criticism versus self-kindness in relation to body image).
(b) It is completely up to you whether or not you decide to take part in this study. If you do decide to take part click NEXT and you will be asked to formally give your consent. Agreeing to join the study does not mean that you have to complete it. You are free to withdraw at any stage without giving a reason.
(c) You MUST be over the age of 16 to take part in this study.
(d) There are two parts to this study, both involving the completion of a number of questionnaire. The first part will take approximately 45 minutes to complete. If you choose to participate in the second follow-up part, this will take approximately 15 minutes to complete another set of questionnaires four weeks later. You may participate in just the first part of the study if you wish.
What will happen to me if I take part?
(a) First you will be asked to give your consent for this study and invited to give your contact details in order to participate in the optional follow-up.
(b) If you agree you will be taken through demographic questions followed by 7 pages of questionnaires.
(c) The questions will ask you about body image, mood and well-being as well as motives for physical activity.
(d) Finally you will be given additional information debriefing you about the research and repeating our contact details, should you have any questions.
(e) Once you have finished this part of the study, if you agreed to participate in the follow-up, we will contact you in 4 weeks by email and send up to one reminder.
(a) The second part of the study is shorter and involves 4 sets of questions including questions on body image, physical activity and motivation. The questions on physical activity will be more focused on specific activities.
(b) First you will be asked to give the anonymity number you will create shortly so your responses can be matched across the first and second sets of questionnaires. This will be given in the email we will send to you inviting you to take part, should you forget your number. However please take note of this number so it can be used in any correspondence with us.
(c) As with the first part of the study, following completion of the questionnaires you will be given information debriefing you about the research and repeating our contact information.
Confidentiality and other information:
(a) It is not intended to cause any distress. However given the nature of the questions asked it is possible that some people may become upset. If at any point you do want to stop, please click QUIT at the bottom of any page (please don’t just close the browser – if you click “QUIT” you will be taken to a debriefing page with some potentially important information).
(b) There are no direct benefits of taking part in this research. It is hoped that the results of this research will be used to develop an intervention to improve body image and physical activity.
(c) The data you provide will be stored under an anonymity number that you will create shortly.
(d) Your data will never be attributable to you and you will not at any point be asked to give your name.
(e) Personal information and data given in your answers will be securely stored and only the researchers named at the bottom of this page will have access to it. This will be stored electronically, in a password-protected environment, for 3 years after the end of the study, after which time it will be destroyed under secure conditions. The data will be anonymised prior to storage.
(f) If you agree to take part in the follow-up study and give contact details, this information will be stored separately from your questionnaire data, securely in a password protected document on a password protected computer, and will be erased immediately after we have contacted you about the follow-up.
(g) The data will be summarised as group data along with hundreds of other participants’ data in academic journals as well as a part of a PhD programme. No data will be used individually and no-one will be identifiable from the information they provide.
(h) You are consenting to the re-use or further analysis of the anonymised data collected in a future ethically-approved study.
